The Arts
Visual Arts
At Booragoon Primary School, we believe that Visual Arts plays a vibrant and integral role in our students’ lifelong learning and wellbeing. Our program is designed to inspire creativity, nurture imagination, and develop artistic skills in an encouraging and inclusive environment.
Students from years 1-6 engage in a diverse range of art activities using mixed media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, textiles, and digital art. Through these experiences, students explore the elements of art and design, experiment with materials and most importantly, learn to have fun.
Our arts program provides exposure to diverse artistic styles and cultural traditions, enabling students to develop a deeper appreciation for the role of the arts in society. Through guided critical thinking activities, they build confidence as they reflect on, respond to, and discuss both the work of other artists and their own creations. These opportunities provide potential gateways to gifted and talented extension in their secondary schooling years.
At our school, we believe that every child is an artist, and our Visual Arts program is committed to helping students discover and grow their creative potential. Student artwork is regularly displayed in our reception area, classrooms and around the school, showcasing the beauty and individuality of our young artists.
Music
Booragoon Primary School delivers an innovative and vibrant music program that nurtures creativity, builds confidence, and inspires a lifelong love of music. Students in Years 1–6 participate in weekly lessons that are active, hands-on and immersive, drawing on the Orff Schulwerk and Kodály approaches to develop skills in beat, rhythm, pitch, notation, performance and composition.
In the early years, students explore music through singing, movement, games, and tuned and untuned percussion instruments. They learn to keep a steady beat, recognise pitch and dynamics, and perform simple pieces in unison and small ensembles. As they progress, students broaden their musical knowledge and skills, progressing to formal musical literacy, including reading and writing music. Ensemble skills are strengthened through rehearsing and performing on a range of percussion instruments, including marimbas.
Students experience music from diverse cultures and styles, discover orchestral and world instruments, explore the roles of composers, and create their own compositions. This rich and varied approach fosters both strong technical skills and a genuine enjoyment of making music. At Booragoon Primary School, music is a visible and valued part of our school community, providing memorable experiences that deepen students’ appreciation for the arts.
Co-curricular opportunities further extend and enrich classroom learning, allowing students to explore their musical talents.
Marimba Band
Marimba Band offers upper primary students an exciting opportunity to develop their ensemble performance skills, with a focus on the marimba. Open to enthusiastic and committed students, the band rehearses weekly, with performance opportunities with the school community throughout the year.
This inclusive ensemble is designed to be engaging and accessible, providing hands-on extension for students beyond the classroom. Through Marimba Band, students build instrumental literacy, collaboration, creativity and a strong sense of musical community.
Choir
Choir is a lively and welcoming ensemble that brings students together through the joy of singing, providing an opportunity to develop vocal skills, learn to sing in harmony, and perform as part of an ensemble.
Through regular rehearsals and performances at assemblies, school events and Choir festivals, students build confidence, teamwork, and stage presence. Choir plays a special role in fostering a lifelong love of singing, while contributing to the cultural life of the school.
Instrumental Music Program
Booragoon Primary School offers music tuition through the Department of Education’s Instrumental Music School Services (IMSS) program. Student selection into the program is based on music aptitude testing, as well as criteria by IMSS staff. Children who meet the criteria receive weekly small-group lessons with specialist teachers, developing their technical and performance skills on a formal instrument. Those learning violin, viola, cello and double bass also participate in our Strings Orchestra, where they develop ensemble playing skills and musicianship.
Drama
At Booragoon Primary School, our Drama program is built on the foundations of Protective Behaviours. We foster a safe, supportive space where every student feels valued. The guiding principles — that everyone has the right to always feel safe, and that we can talk to someone about anything, no matter what — shape every lesson and interaction.
Through imaginative and engaging activities, students develop essential life skills including:
communication * creativity * collaboration * and critical thinking
The Drama classroom is a nurturing environment where empathy, inclusivity, respect, kindness, and strong social skills are not only taught — they’re celebrated. Open-ended challenges ignite students’ imaginations and build confidence. Storytelling and performance come to life through a rich variety of mediums: picture books, Theatresports, puppetry and script work.
