The Role of the School Board

The School Board is actively involved in the governance of the school. This means participating in shaping and monitoring the school’s objectives, priorities and general policy directions. In particular, the Board takes part in developing and overseeing the school’s three-year business plan.
The Board is formed with the fundamental purpose of enabling parents, staff and members of the community to work together to best meet the needs and interests of students and enhance the education provided.

The Board does not have a role in school management. This function is the responsibility of the principal and involves educational leadership and the effective day to day administration, supervision and control of the school and its staff.

Functions of the School Board

The functions of the school board include taking part in

Establishing and reviewing, from time to time, the school’s objectives, priorities and general policy directions
Planning financial arrangements necessary to fund those objectives, priorities and directions
Evaluating the school’s performance in achieving those objectives, priorities and directions
Promoting the school in the community
Determining, in consultation with students, their parents and staff, a dress code for students when they are attending or representing the school; and
Formulating codes of conduct for students at the school

The functions also include approving

Contributions and charges for the provision of certain materials, services and facilities
Extra costs determined by the principal to be paid for participation in an extra cost optional component of the school’s educational program
The items determined by the principal to be supplied by a student for the student’s personal use in the school’s educational program; and
An agreement or arrangement for advertising or sponsorship in relation to a government school.
